Bark is a desktop app that provides lumber traders with a competitive advantage in the industry through valuable insights into the lumber market. With Bark, traders can gain access to real-time lumber prices, track their trades, receive price alerts, explore historical data, all within a single platform. I had the privilege of leading the design process from its start to completion.

In the world of lumber trading, traders have long relied on labour-intensive methods to do their job. This includes manually checking prices on spreadsheets and documenting them to guide trading decisions.
This process becomes even more time-consuming with the thousands of lengthy and hard-to-lookup lumber names (SKUs). Identifying this inefficiency, we took the opportunity to create a product that could revolutionize the way lumber traders operate.

Fortunately, we had someone on our team who worked in the industry. Through affiliation with their brokerage, we gained access to the comprehensive data necessary to make Bark effective. This data served as the foundation for Bark's functionality, enabling us to provide traders with the insights and tools they need to navigate the lumber market.

Having a trader on our team also provided us with invaluable insights into the specific needs of lumber traders. We were able to utilize their feedback and suggestions to create early prototypes of the app, allowing us to visualize and evaluate its design.
By incorporating their input from the early stages, we were able to shape the app to meet the precise demands and expectations of traders.

The app resonated very well with local traders during testing. Through their feedback, we learned about additional features and improvements that would enhance their trading experience. However, due to budget constraints, we had to prioritize certain elements over others.

We aimed to simplify the search for lumber SKUs by incorporating a design inspired by mobile number input fields. This approach, combined with arrow key inputs and autofill properties in the dropdown menu, expedited the search process for traders.

Our graphs display extensive historical data for each SKU, spanning up to 20 years. Traders can easily compare lumber prices and get the data they need to evaluate market trends and optimize their trading strategies.

We implemented price alerts as one of the most requested features in Bark. Instead of manually checking price sheets every week, traders receive notifications when the price hits their specified threshold. This convenient functionality greatly enhances efficiency, empowering traders to make timely decisions without constant monitoring.

In our first year, we onboarded 10 enterprise clients and facilitated over 10,000 trades! Traders using our platform saw a 37% reduction in average trade execution time and a 15% increase in trade volume compared to their previous manual workflows.

During the development of Bark, the launch faced multiple delays due to
Bark's to an extensive QA process. Looking back, I recognized that I could have provided clearer instructions for expected states and interactions, potentially reducing QA time. This experience served as a valuable lesson, highlighting the importance of effective communication in ensuring smoother development cycles.
